With Ottawa being right in the thick of the hottest days of the year, it can be uncomfortably hot outside. While you can find refuge from the sun inside, the Summer heat can still prove problematic whether you are inside or not.
This season, beat the heat with some of our tips and tricks on how to stay cool and care for your home when the sun is relentless.
Get Your A/C Ready
Getting A/C installed can really make a difference if your home runs hot in general, creating a much more comfortable environment for your family when they are lounging around at home or going to sleep. Humidity can be just as uncomfortable as the heat, and an A/C unit can really help cool the air to your preference, preventing you from sweating or having clothes stick to your skin inside. We all know how bad that feels!
If you are tight on a budget, strategically placed intake & exhaust fans in your windows can help generate some airflow helping your home remain cooler. Installing ceiling fans may also be more economical depending on your home.
Protect Your Paint
The sun can be harsh on your paint, whether that’s on your fence, deck, or siding. Discoloration, chipping, and warping are the most common issues with paint encounters based on the intensity of the sun.
UV and fade-resistant paint are ideal for the Summer (and for all seasons in general), helping you maintain the appearance of your perfect white picket fence or your newly constructed deck. Consider these options especially if these aspects of your home get a lot of direct sunlight.
Humidifier For Dry Heat
Cool down without using a lot of energy with a humidifier. You’ve already been using a humidifier for dry winter climates, but it’s also just as useful in the summer to help combat nose bleeds, eczema, and other heat-related issues.
Using a humidifier in combination with your A/C will help you save a little extra change, by allowing you to reduce the A/C.
If you live in a humid climate like we do, you may not need a humidifier, but you should make sure that the humidity in your home is around 30-50% to protect your hardwood floors.
Re-insulate
Did you know that insulation helps block heat from entering your home during the Summer? Proper insulation helps you cut down on energy costs as well as keep you cool.
It’s a win-win!
