It’s almost Summer in Ontario and that means that a vacation may be on the horizon for you and your family!
Maybe you are charting away on a cruise to Spain, relaxing under the palm trees in Mexico, or even being a bit more adventurous with an expedition in Iceland. Whatever it may be, you need to make sure that your home is taken care of before you set off across the world for weeks on end.
Here is your pre-travel home checklist to make sure your home is ready before you leave:
Put A Hold On Your Mail
If you are going away for an extended period of time, you may want to put your mail on hold. Can you imagine coming back to your house with 5 amazon packages at your front door and 30 letters stuffed into your mailbox?
If you are going away for longer than 2 weeks, a hold on your mail might not be a bad idea and ensures that you aren’t worried about overflow or getting anything stolen in the meantime.
Adjust Thermostat
If your home is empty, keeping the heating cranked up is unnecessary. Heating your home is expensive as it is, but heating your home when you are not even there? You are just giving away money for free!
Make sure that you drop the temperature and turn off the heat in your home so that you aren’t surprised with a nasty bill at the end of the month.
Mow The Lawn
Mowing the lawn before you leave has a couple of advantages. First, it ensures that your neighbours don’t have to look at long, unsightly blades of grass protruding from your front yard, and second, it helps signal to thieves that you are in fact not on vacation and very much still home, helping dissuade any potential robbers.
Plus, if you mow the lawn before you leave you likely won’t have to mow the lawn right when you get back which will let you get some R&R before you get back to the reality of homeownership.
Another option is to hire someone to mow the lawn for you, especially if you are away for an extended period of time. It also means that the need to mow the lawn is not as urgent when you return.
Take Out The Trash
Can you think of anything worse than coming home from a vacation to the realization that you left your smelly trash in the garbage for the last few weeks? If you are going to prioritize any of these tips, this is the one you’re gonna want to remember!
Make sure that you have taken all the trash out of all rooms, and placed them in the outdoor bins to come back to a fresh, clean home post-vaca!
Set Your Alarm
Protecting your home is vital when you are far away from it. Ensure that you have set your alarms to prevent break-ins and theft.
As an added measure, have a family member drop by routinely to keep an eye on the place and to report any suspicious activity.
You can never be too careful!
