TV Renos vs. Reality
• BUDGET — Know your budget and stick to it. Be prepared for unexpected surprises and plan to have an additional 10-20% of the projected costs for any surprises. It is a good idea to sit down with your contractor and be realistic. Find out the things that you want to spend extra money on, and where you might be able to save. Remember, what you see on TV is not always realistic, those fancy appliances can cost thousands of dollars. Work within your budget, and you can have a space you will love and not regret.
• TIME — A lot can be packed into a TV show and it is hard to know how long a renovation actually takes. This is not a realistic idea of a timeframe for your renovation. Make sure you speak to your contractor about the timeframe and what you should expect. Be prepared for the reno’s to take longer than you planned, and make sure that materials are ordered well in advance, as there can be major delays due to material shortages.
Once you are ready to talk to someone about starting your project you will want to find a contractor that you trust. Make sure you ask for references and interview a few contractors to find someone that is right for the job.
